Abstract
Proximity analysis is a data analytic approach which measures the contiguity of subjective organization of output. One approach to operationalize this is to measure the proximity, or inversely the distance, between all pairs in an ordered response sequence. The procedure is often used to investigate the organization of information in memory, assessed with some measure of recall. The basic premise is that items which are grouped together in memory will also be grouped together at retrieval and output. Proximity is a FORTRAN 77 program for computing inter-item proximity values. The method was proposed by Friendly (1979) but no computer program was developed for it.
