Abstract
The Spelling Component Test, which is a timed assessment of spelling ability using a format in which subjects fill in the missing letters in words frequently misspelled by university students, is described. In Study 1, the test was administered to 386 university students along with 12 other measures of cognitive ability. A factor analysis revealed that the test is a valid measure of crystallized intelligence. Study 2 presents norms based upon 702 undergraduates. The test appears to have high reliability. A gender difference favoring females appears to be present. The full test and scoring key are included in an appendix.
