Abstract
This study examines the internal-consistency reliability, and factorial validity of the Substitutes for Leadership Questionnaire (Kerr, 1977) in an educational setting. This instrument, which was modified slightly to reflect school roles and tasks, measuring 13 contextual factors (characteristics of staff, teaching, and the organization structure) known as leadership substitutes which are hypothesized to have an interaction effect in the relationship between hierarchical leader behaviors and subordinate performance and attitudes. Survey data were collected from teachers in a sample of 47 schools. These data support Kerr's original formulation on leadership substitutes for 11 of the original 13 factors.
