Neither the reliability nor the validity of the Roth MCRE have been examined since the initial publication in 1961. This study investigates (1) the responses of mothers and fathers to the same scale and (2) the underlying dimensions assessed by the MCRE. No significant difference in the mean scale scores between the 83 mothers and fathers emerged. A factor analysis showed little correlation between the conceptually organized scales and the empirically derived factors. The results are discussed and the need for both revision and reforming of the instrument are noted.
