Previous data have suggested that the major life events measures appear to be seriously contaminated by a negative affectivity (NA) dimension. The present study extended that methodological inquiry to the daily hassles measure. In assessing the hassles-somatic illness relationship, the daily hassles measure was highly associated with an independent measure of NA. This finding suggests contamination similar to that reported for major life event measures. The need for an uncontaminated daily hassles measure is discussed.
