Lawson's Classroom Test of Formal Reasoning was administered to 150 subjects. A unidimensional latent trait model was used to test a single-factor hypothesis. This hypothesis was rejected, both for the original test and for a modified version. It was concluded that the test failed to provide a valid measure of formal reasoning. This failure may be associated with a test format which neglects essential aspects of formal reasoning emphasised by Inhelder and Piaget.
