Abstract
Validity and reliability evidence is presented for the Vowel Matching Test (VMT), an instrument that measures primary grade children's ability to discriminate medial vowel sounds. The VMT consists of a series of seven picture sets, each set containing a stimulus picture and three item pictures. Based on the responses of 43 first-grade pupils, the results indicated that the VMT correlated .76 with a word recognition test. It exhibited an internal consistency coefficient of .78. The VMT may be useful for researchers studying early reading acquisition or for learning disability specialists diagnosing children referred for reading problems.
