Abstract
Four procedures were used to assess high-school students' status on 12 of Murray's "needs." The instruments included the Adjective Check List, a self-rating form, and a paired comparisons form com pleted by each subject; and peer ratings made by classmates nomi nated by each subject. Campbell and Fiske's (1959) multitrait-multi method matrix was used to assess the validity of the four procedures. That the direct self-ratings seemed to indicate the highest degree of convergent validity led to the recommendation that this relatively simple approach be used in future studies of a comparable nature.
