Abstract
This study examined the predictive validity of self-actualization indices of the Personal Orientation Dimensions (POD) relative to ability in facilitative communication as measured by the Gross Rating of Facilitative Interpersonal Functioning Scale (GRFIF). Subjects were 139 graduate students in a master's degree program in Counselor Education. Scores on POD scales of Strength, Weakness, Love, and Mission were correlated .46, .25, .40, and .45 (all p < .01) with GRFIF scores. Synergistic Integration and Potentiation measures were correlated .18 (p < .05) and .19 (p < .05), respectively, with GRFIF scores. It was concluded that self-actualization measures afford promise as predictors of ability in facilitative communication among counselor trainees. It was recommended that further cross-validation investigations be conducted with individuals in other mental health professions.
