An objective instrument for assessing moral reasoning, the Ethical Reasoning Inventory (ERI), was derived from Kohlberg's Scoring Manual and compared with two other objective measures. Kohlberg's interview was administered to a group of college freshmen and sophomores along with the objective instruments. The ERI showed a higher correlation with the Kohlberg interview and demonstrated a higher internal consistency than either of the other two objective measures. Data obtained from a second sample showed the ERI to have a test-retest reliability which compared favorably with published data on the other objective instruments and showed an expected negative correlation with the California F-scale.
