The construction of attitude measures and similar instruments frequently requires the identification of relevant areas to be measured. Usually, a generally accepted theoretical structure does not exist to define these areas. It is proposed that latent partition analysis can be used to develop conceptually independent sub-scales in such a case by pooling the expertise of several persons. An example of the use of latent partition analysis for this purpose is provided as well as suggestions of its applicability in other areas, such as, content validation.
