Abstract
MAPP (A Mathematics Placement Program) is used to place entering freshmen in mathematics courses which are commensurate with their backgrounds and abilities. It consists of two COBOL programs. The first descrambles information from an optical scanner tape, while the second uses built-in variables to set up a counter, to grade a mathematics placement examination, to check biographical data, and to select an appropriate course. The course in which each student is recommended to enroll is based upon ten different (weighted) factors. Having been used for three years, the program is considered to be a viable alternative to the traditional mathematics placement process.
