The major purpose of this study was to validate the noxious codes of the Behavioral Coding System for the measurement of aggressive behavior in schools. Subjects were 20 fifth and sixth grade boys identified as either aggressive (N = 10) or prosocial (N = 10). Six 10-minute observations were made of the subjects in both classroom and playground settings. The noxious codes were found to discriminate between aggressive and prosocial subjects and to discriminate between playground and classroom settings for the aggressive subjects.
