Abstract
In this paper, an exact test for use with certain types of Likert scale is presented. The test may be used on the assumption that the points of the scale are equally-spaced, that subjects respond independently of each other, and that each point of the scale has an equal likelihood of response for each subject. A table of critical values is presented for use with small samples.
When samples are large, it is shown that a normal approximation may be used. This approximation is described and illustrated.
