Abstract
Scores or subtest scores on the five CLEP General Examinations plus SAT Verbal and Mathematics scores were compared with grades earned in related college courses. The examinees were 216 sophomores representing a random sample of 1132 sophomores who took the CLEP General Examinations. For each of eight subject-matter areas two grade measures were used: quality points earned and grade-point average. For both measures the appropriate CLEP test had the highest correlation among all the tests except for the Social Sciences and History subtests. Step-wise multiple regressions, using quality points as criteria and CLEP tests plus SAT tests as predictors, indicated that the SAT tests did not appreciably add to the grade variance measured by the CLEP tests.
