A validity study was conducted to examine the degree to which Diagnostic Readiness Test (DRT) scores and Pre-Admissions Test scores could predict success or failure on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Data were obtained from 5,698 students in 135 schools of nursing on three measures: DRT scores, Pre-Admissions Test scores, and success or failure on the NCLEX-RN. An approximation of a hierarchical logistic regression model was used in the analysis. Results indicate that the DRT is the only significant predictor of NCLEX-RN performance and that the DRT is a stronger predictor for baccalaureate graduates than for nonbaccalaureate graduates. Directions for further research are suggested.
