Abstract
A case survey method was used to investigate superintendent succession under conditions of declining enrollments in school districts. Variables related to the three possible explanations of succession were explored relative to succession and nonsuccession in 56 districts. Support was found for thegeneral explanations and speciflc variables as predictors, with superintendent relations with the board and communities emerging as the strongest predictors of succession.
