Abstract
Current interest in leadership studies has attracted scholars from many of the social science fields. A plethora of definitions of leader ship exist. In his book, The Functions of the Executive, Chester Barnard provides us with another-one well worth our study. This article, by Dr. Edward Boland Smith, will examine the views of Barnard on leadership and indicate their relevance for us today. Dr. Smith is an Assistant Professor at Boston College and the Director of the M.A.T./M.S.T. Program (Master of Arts/Science in Teaching Program) in the School of Education.
