Abstract
The role of the schools in a rapidly changing society suggests that decisions concerning organization for instruction must not be based on academic considerations alone. To do so runs the risks of perpetuating social and economic distinctions which exist in the society and of under mining the cohesion necessary to hold society together. The author believes that the teacher, in her status as the leader of a classroom social system, is in the best position to ensure that this does not occur. Dr. Sarthory is Assistant Professor of Education at State University College, Geneseo, New York.
