Abstract
In the autumn Quarterly's editorial Jack Culbertson discussed some possible implications of increasing specialization for the study and practice of educational administration. Culbertson maintained that there are major conflicting tendencies inherent in specialization and that these tendencies must be kept in balance if the challenge of speciali zation is to be met. The editors invited a professor and a practitioner to comment on the kinds of issues raised by Culbertson's statement. Leon Ovsiew is on the faculty of Temple University where he serves as assistant dean of the College of Education; Thomas R. Bowman is superintendent of schools in Abington, Pennsylvania.
