Abstract
Drawing principally upon the writings of the sociologist Talcott Parsons, the author examines James Anderson's recent treatment of bureaucratic rules in the Quarterly. The author asserts that Anderson's definition of bureaucratic rules lacks specificity and that many of Anderson's con cepts clarify little the problems with which he is attempting to deal. The editors strongly welcome this kind of critical analysis of previously published pieces.
