Abstract
The writer contends a series of themes or doctrines have characterized educational administration over the last century. These doctrines, strongly influenced by forces outside the field, provide a justification for the ad ministrator and his work. The author hopes that future doctrines will be less ambiguous and more indigenous to education. Mr. Button is assistant professor of education at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
