Abstract
In explaining variations in educational costs across the nation, Professor Swanson shows variations in the general wage level of state and regional labor markets to be the principal cause. He suggests that "societal esteem" is a significant component of teacher pay with important implications for federal support proposals and teacher recruitment strategies. Mr. Swanson is assistant professor of education at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
