Social Stratification,Educational Opportunity,and the Role of State Departments of Education

Abstract

It is frequently argued that administrative policy should be based upon research in the social sciences. In this paper the authors review research concerning social stratification and educational opportunity, formulate a policy goal upon the basis of that research, and then outline a series of administrative strategies for reaching that policy goal.
