Abstract
Data were collected on the use of prescribed medication by students who were classified as profoundly mentally handicapped in a North Florida school district. It was found that 53% of the students were receiving at least one form of medication. Further analyses were conducted on the specific types of medication prescribed and the relation of prescriptions to certain demographic variables, i.e. gender, age, residence, and race. Discussion focused on the implications of the findings for public school personnel working with students with profound mental handicaps.
