Abstract
A model for training parents to teach total communication to their language-disordered children is presented. Five severely language-disordered children and their parents participated in a 10-week sign training program. Group parent teaching sessions were conducted in four phases and individual training was provided on a weekly basis. All children showed substantial gains in their use of productive language. Guidelines for designing similar training programs are discussed.
