Six mentally retarded children were successfully trained to solve simple written problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The experimental procedure consisted of teaching the subjects structured solution strategies that transferred numerals into spatial arrangements. These strategies were taught by normal third and fourth graders acting as tutors.
