Standards for residential facilities for the mentally retarded have been developed by the Accreditation Council for Facilities for the Mentally Retarded, composed of professional and consumer-representative organizations. Standards for educational and other professional services to residents have been included. Many of these standards are relevant to educational programs in nonresidential as well as residential settings. They are offered for the guidance and and instruction of educators providing such programs, as well as for use in a national, voluntary accreditation program aimed at improving all services for the retarded.
