A summer institute was developed and made available to experienced teachers who elected to work toward certification to teach trainable mentally retarded children (TMR). The major emphasis was on retraining a group of experienced teachers who had a wide variety of academic backgrounds, but who were not qualified to teach TMR children. Some of the teachers had limited experience teaching handicapped children. As a result of the summer institute, 18 classroom teachers were prepared to teach special classes for the trainable.
