Data resulting from two studies involving 499 mentally retarded children in special classes revealed that the differences between actual and expected achievement tend to increase as a function of age regardless of IQ. While the MA may be a reasonably valid measure of the developmental level of the individual, other factors appear to have a significant effect on achievement and the MA has questionable utility as a standard for educational placement.
