Abstract
The need for an adequate supply of effective and appropriate educational materials for use with the mentally retarded in this country remains a critical and unsolved problem dating back to the establishment of the first public school classes for the retarded. In the months ahead, articles relating to educational materials for the retarded will be published in this department. An attempt will be made to present a broad coverage of topics, including listings and evaluations of existing materials, the clarification of issues and problems, and suggestions for ways in which the chronic need for materials can be met.
In the leadoff article, the editor of this department explores the history of this problem and discusses the paradox of a materials shortage in a materialistic society. A rather massive solution to the materials shortage is suggested.
