Abstract
The author wishes to thank Alan Whaits, of Clifton, who introduced him to the Tracts and subsequently clarified many obscure points; Canon Harding, who introduced him to some of the later printings and the American edition of the Tracts; Gillian Hogarth, who guided him through the procedures of publication; and the Society of St Vincent de Paul (England and Wales) for permission to consult and to quote from unpublished manuscripts in its archives.
