Abstract
A meeting at Chantilly from 15–17 December 1990 on the theme ‘Monastic Community and European Community’ brought together just under a hundred monastic Cellarers of the Cistercian and Benedictine monasteries of France, together with some invited from Belgium and Luxembourg. Their principal concerns were economic, but as disciples of St. Benedict, they also considered the wider spectrum.
Cardinal Jean Marie Lustiger opened the conference with a talk on the challenge that tomorrow's Europe throws down to monasticism. The text translated below appeared in the ‘Lettre de Maredsous’.
