Abstract
In England and Japan—two other industrialized democracies—the rates of violent crime are much lower than are those in the United States. A com parison of the rates of crime against persons committed in New York, London, and Tokyo reveals a similar situation: Violent crime in our largest city far exceeds that committed in London or Tokyo.
