Abstract
Police professionalization and militancy are important factors in community-police relations. The respondents in this survey were drawn from a segment of Detroit's population that was expected to be highly supportive of the major police union in the police department. They were surprisingly critical of the police union's activities regarding professionalism and militancy, and only by an insubstantial majority did they approve of the union's contribution to police work. The major question raised here concerns the consequences for police departments and cities if community-police relations deteriorate further.
