Abstract
The enlightened thinking that has classified prostitution as a social illness rather than a crime has, ironically, aggravated the problem. The short-term sentence—a futile, expensive, and farci cal exercise in admission and discharge procedures—precludes a rehabilitation program and even works a hardship on the prosti tute herself.
