Abstract
Societal conflicts present the British police with challenges not unlike those facing their American counterparts. If these chal lenges are to be met, the British police must overcome several shortcomings. They must ease their administrative inflexibility arising from a strong attachment to tradition, solve their inter- and intra-jurisdictional problems, improve their personnel re cruitment, and end their racial discrimination.
