Abstract
Since the Michigan Juvenile Code grants intake discretion to the Juvenile Division of the Probate Court in only brief, broad terms, without spelling out the exact dimensions of this tool, intake in juvenile court can be as significant as the judge decrees. Whether or not formal intake procedures are set up in juvenile court, screening of cases does occur. The police screen, the prosecutors screen, and the judges' power to dismiss effectively screens out many cases.
