Abstract
This article traces the early attempts in Europe to establish facilities that would be a transitional step in releasing the offender into the community and describes some of the more recent American programs of that nature. The paper concludes with a description of Robert Bruce House, a halfway house pro gram sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health and operated in conjunction with the New Jersey State Reformatory, at Bordentown.
