Abstract
Complaining witnesses in abortion cases are in an unusually good position to supply information as to the defendant's modus operandi, aseptic technique, sobriety, and professional skill as well as the fee charged, extent of the practice, and attitude toward clients. Some illustrative cases are presented and a break down of thirty-four nonmedically trained abortionists analyzed. The author confirms the views of Bromberg and Keve that the untrained female abortionist, because of certain emotional deprivations in her background, is reacting in part to an un conscious need to reject children or deny them to others of her own sex. Examination of a grand jury presentment reveals that doctors who have been unable to establish a successful legitimate practice often turn to abortion as a lucrative way of earning a living.
