Abstract
Organized crime saps the faith of the American people in their government. In an effort to restore that faith, the federal government, through the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section of the Department of Justice, is seeking out and in vestigating the leaders of organized crime and their protectors and employees. The intelligence unit of this section is gathering data on 700 leading racketeers; other agencies are supplying information on thousands of these racketeers' associates. The working leads gleaned from the information are carefully fol lowed up with a view toward making a case and obtaining a conviction. With the aid of the new federal gambling laws passed last year, the federal government has already made inroads into syndicated gambling in many areas of the country.
