Abstract
The reasons why few probation departments engage in research are that they deal in direct services rather than self-evaluation and development, they lack adequately trained and motivated staff, and they provide little encouragement for this type of activity. The Kings County Probation Department is an excep tion to the rule. Its creative administration has helped stimulate a number of research projects in the application of group therapy to the treatment of probationers.
