Abstract

INQUIRY centers for adults offer counseling for persons who seek to make career changes, to continue their education, or to re-enter the world of work (i.e., women) but who are unaware of most of the available opportunities. Computers are used to assist in the counseling by providing a comprehensive data bank of information on educational, leisure time, and occupational opportunities and by teaching problem-solving processes and awareness of self as decision-maker. Educational and career development tasks provide a diagnostic and prescriptive framework for services. Centers are being developed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a leader in advanced computer technology. An integrative computer-assisted counseling service, such as INQUIRY centers are designed to be, could make needed counseling and information services available to many more adults than are currently being served.
