Abstract
Building on a model of faculty development that suggests a method for reinvigorating faculty members, the authors examine the relationship between academic institutions' expectations for faculty performance and actual faculty activity in the areas of teaching, research, service, and "other." For more than half of the respondents to the survey, expectations and performance diverged substantially as the faculty members' length of service increased. Specifically, faculty members were spending more time on service activities and less time in research than institutions expected. For institutions that want to increase their faculty members' research productivity, the authors suggest applying the principle that a person would like to leave an educational legacy.
