Abstract
This overview defines B&B operations and explores operators' legal rights and obligations. In general, a B&B qualifies as a private “host for hire” and not a place of public accommodation. While such an arrangement exempts B&B establishments from some federal and state civil-rights laws, local standards and conditions must still be met, and the “for hire” relationship means the host assumes more than a moral responsibility for guests' safety and welfare.
