Abstract
Microtel is a super-budget lodging concept developed by a company in Rochester, New York. The formula relies on attractive yet simple construction, including interior corri- dors for improved safety; a low-maintenance design; and room rates that are posted by the street to attract custom- ers away from the competition. Microtel does little or no advertising, relying instead on capturing traffic generated by the presence of the other budget chains in the same neighborhood. The first Microtel, in Rochester, experiences occupancy rates well above local and national averages. There are currently five Microtels in operation and more than 135 in various stages of development, mostly located in the eastern United States.
