Abstract
The first part of the article considers some deep transformational trends marking the global social formation and discusses the questions they pose for the role of the nation-state. Focus is on economic internationalization, internationalization of civil society, and the evolution of the international political superstructure. One of the questions concerning the role of the state is whether and how it contributes to these processes. The second part examines the US state in this perspective in the selected areas of GATT and economic policy coordination. The main conclusion is that it promotes economic internationalization and the evolution of the international political superstructure, but does so in a selective manner, defending hard cores of national sovereignty.
