Abstract
After exploring the ideological underpinnings of various approaches to the New Interna tional Economic Order, this article focuses on one of these approaches, viz. the Social Democratic or reformist attitude towards the NIEO. The speeches and reports given in various meetings and congresses of the Socialist International are analysed. A distinct Social Democratic ideology on the NIEO does emerge, although it is to a certain extent divided between diverging orientations. The main distinction between these orientations is the importance attributed to the national emancipation and self-reliance beyond the international redistribution and meeting of the basic needs of the population on which all of these orientations seem to agree. The established Social Democratic view, though by no means fully united, stresses the importance of the balanced development of the interna tional system, while some of the Third World forces regard the internal struggle as more important.
