This article applies preference assumptions derived from the axioms of lexicographic utility to four of Northern Ireland's parliamentary elections. The results are compared to those obtained from application of analogous spatial assumptions. The principal findings are that rational-choice-based voting models are relevant to the Northern Irish electorate, and that voters there display patterns of behavior consistent with both lexicographic and spatial preference assumptions.
