An overview of existing research on the psychological aspects of atopic dermatitis is presented. Conclusive evaluation of specificity hypotheses, relat ing to emotional conflicts or personality types, is lacking, yet these theories continue to exert their influence. A reactive-interactive model is elaborated whereby a number of psychological processes exacerbate and maintain the disorder. Management strategies and psychiatric involvement are discussed.
